GOP New Hampshire primary debate tonight on ABC at 9pm ET

Tonight will mark the first of two debates this weekend focused on the New Hampshire Republican primary. This evening's debate will take place at Saint Anselm College and is sponsored by ABC News, Yahoo! and WMUR. Sunday morning will feature a GOP debate broadcast on NBC at 9am ET (yes, am) but look for more details on that later today.

Air Time: Saturday, January 7th at 9pm ET / 6pm PT on ABC

Participants: Santorum, Romney, Paul, Perry, Gingrich, Huntsman

Report from WMUR:

MANCHESTER, N.H. — WMUR and ABC News will be teaming up for a prime-time debate this Saturday before the New Hampshire Primary.

The debate will take place at 9 p.m. on Jan. 7 on the campus of St. Anselm College. It will be moderated by ABC's Diane Sawyer and George Stephanopoulos and WMUR's Josh McElveen.

Debate crews are getting the center ready to take center stage. Light rigger Walter Webber is helping out with the spotlight.

"I go up in the light and I focus in on all the candidates and everything," Webber said.

St. Anselm students, meanwhile, stood in for the candidates during debate practice.

"I'm Gov. Jon Huntsman's stand-in, of course. But the moment they gave this to me, I pointed out that they misspelled (the name) with an 'H,' so today when I came to the arena, they put a new one with a correctly spelled 'Jon,'" student Jake Wagner said.

Students impressed the stage manager on loan from “Good Morning America.”

"Everything's going incredibly smooth. The stand-ins we have from this school are so intelligent. They're asking questions that we couldn't even think of, kind of. (They) installed our faith in the future generation," stage manager Scott Kaye said.

Stephanopoulos told News 9 he expects some fireworks.

"We think it's our job to make sure that the differences between and among the candidates are exposed and really hashed out before the voters of N.H., so they can make up their minds and make their decisions, fully informed decisions by Tuesday, and my sense is the candidates are not going to be shy about that,” Stephanopoulos said.

The debate will be broadcast on WMUR and across the nation on ABC.

This debate is certain to offer a Mitt Romney pile-on by the likes of Gingrich, Santorum and Paul. I'd expect Huntsman to come out fairly strong as well since all his eggs are in the New Hampshire basket. Rick Perry will be debating with an eye toward South Carolina since polls show he has little to no chance of making headway in the Granite state.

I am voting for Ron Paul THIS TIME TO PREVENT ANOTHER WAR!
Americans just simply DO NOT HAVE MONEY TO BOMB IRAN AND GO TO ANOTHER WAR! israel has the full capability to bomb Iran and defend the, selve. Why should American soliders be the ones to die again for Israel?
All of the OTHER Republican candidates want to go to another war. Can you please ask them and get clear answersplease? Would they go to ANOTHER WAR AGAIN or not, please ask this question to Romney, Newt, Perry and Santorum? My vote will go to Ron Paul based on the answer!

Can you ask the candidates Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum and Rick Perry if they would take this nation to ANOTHER WAR to Iran or not? Clear question please?I want to know their ckear position on Iran.

Here's my debate question: "Many immigrants decide to come to the U.S. illegally due to the extremely long wait for American citizenship. If you are willing to build a wall to keep illegal immigrants out of the country, what would you do to speed the process and shorten the waiting time for legal immigrants, while still keeping the borders safe?"

    Here would be my answer:

Of course, I would hire government employees (or a company with a government contract) to work in the immigration department (thus creating new jobs and helping immigrants become citizens faster by having more people work with the Department of Immigration. If the laws happen to change where an immigrant must learn English, I'd hire teachers to teach English as a second language to hopeful immigrants as part of the registration process.

I don not understand why my comments are awaiting moderation?
I simply want ABC News to ask a question to the candidates Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry if they wouls bomb Iran and take this nation to another war if things get bigger after bombing Iran or not? This is a critical question and I want to know those 4 candidates standings before I make up my mind who to vote for in NH? We all know Ron Paul and Jon Juntsman are against the war!

  • Mike

If Ron Paul does not win this Presidency, then the US is done for. It does not matter if you vote for Santorum, Romney, or Obama at that point. They are all the same. If Ron Paul does not become president, the US will be the target of terrorists and the global elite until America is simply Chinese.

  • Marlene

I have a debate question for each of the candidates, by a simple show of hands — who would be willing to forego his salary as President until a balanced budget is put in place? In other words, you get paid when you balance the budget, and not one day before.

  • Jim

I want to know what Mitt Romney would do if bombing Iran won't be enough to secure Israel's security in the Middle East Would Romney take this nation to another war or let Israel defend themselves?

  • Liberty

Ron Paul Vs Status Qou can't wait. Its saddening to see the establishment candidates surge. Just goes to show the parties and media manipulate the masses.

  • Andrew Vasil

Give Ron Paul some time to explain his foreign policy. Give the candidates a scenario concerning Iran, instance, what if Iran attacked Iraq, what would they do as President? Ask what Ron Paul would do as President if North Korea invaded South Korea.

  • Mr. President:
    January 6, 2012

I see you are back in Washington, I am glad that you and your family are doing well. I only wish that our nation was in the same conditions. I have some random thoughts that I would like to share with you.

Our constitution was inspired by the creator and written in the blood of American Patriots. This is a documents that sets the sidelines for our great republic. It is written so as to prevent a tyrant from assuming the role of a monarch. Sir, you have crossed the line and you will be held accountable for your disdain for our nation, its constitution, and its laws. You want the American people to trust you, how can we trust you when you will not open your records to public examination. Please open up and be transparent to the American people as you promised.

It appears, you have no moral center. You lie with a straight face. When you go against our constitution, our congress and the will of the people you are spitting on the graves of the countless millions that have died for freedom and justice. What gives you the right to dishonor the blood our our forefathers?

You have appointed a racist to head the Justice department. A man that is guilty of crimes that led to the death of Mexican citizens and Federal employees. Your support for this criminal has cheapened the oval office to the point that your actions and words have no value or no meaning. The blood of these victims cover your administration. You and Holder will not be allowed to forget this crime nor will you be allowed to wipe these people out of the nation's memory. As long as there are freedom loving people, justice will be demanded for the children of Mexico and our Federal employees. Justice Brandeis wrote "Crime is contagious, if the government becomes a law breaker, it breeds contempt for the law." Holder and you Mr. President has bred contempt for he law by placing yourselves above the law.

When I think of the great men that held the position of Attorney General and realize that we now have a man that has dishonored the legacy of the Justice Department. A department that has been the front runner in righting the wrongs in our nation history, Tears flow from my eyes and anger from my heart. To think that a man such as Holder is allowed to flaunt our laws and use the department to punish rather than to ensure justice for all Americans. Please send this liar back to Chicago and restore a semblance of justice in our land. I do not use the word lair carelessly but I heard him lie to the Congress. This is a justifiable use of the liar label.

"There is a higher court than courts of justice and that is the court of conscience. It supersedes all other courts."Mohandas Gandhi. You may laugh and think that you are invincible as you are in control of the justice department and a small percentage of the courts. We the American people are the ultimate judge, the giver of justice and we will right the evils of your administration. Our conscience as a nation will not let you walk on our constitution and our laws.

Please send this letter or one of your own to your congressman. Demand that they take actions on Holder.

    • Sara

Your letter sounds as if it is full of hate, yet your tag name reads: "without hate"? Transparency? Where was transparency when the country decided to enter war with Iraq in order to assert "freedom", only to find out after the fact that it should have began in Afghanistan from the start? How can we have transparency when lobbying and inside trading is allowed? Where is transparency when we allow for privatization to control the livelihood of others inside and outside of this country? Moreover, where is transparency when the country does not allow gays to have access to "the pursuit of happiness"? I agree, transparency is important; however, it does not seem to reflect in the decisions made by conservatives.
Where is the conservative "moral center" regarding the issues above? Think with much consideration. Some of these conservative approaches seem to be a throw back to oppressive ideas. It's alarming and misleading.

      • DukeNukemAll

Damn! How the truth hurts.. You can't sugar coat the truth. When are people going to wake up? Simply telling like it is isn't hate speech.. What the He!! is wrong with you lady?

  • Jim

I want to know what Mitt Romney would do if bombing Iran won't be enough to secure Israel's security in the Middle East Would Romney take this nation to another war or let Israel defend themselves?

    • DukeNukemAll

Well my friend what would you do? Would you let Israel, our only real ally in the region, be wiped off the map?

  • IF TRUE AMERICANS REALLY WANT TO TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK, THEN YOU REALLY HAVE ONLY ONE CHOICE, THAT WOULD BE GINGRICH. AMERICA REALLY NEEDS HIM. THE PEOPLE THAT CALLS HIM NAMES AND SCREAMS TO DOWN GRADE HIM ARE REALLY ANTI AMERICAN, YOU WANT TO SEE AMERICA FALL. OBAMY HAS DONE SO MUCH DAMAGE THAT ONLY GINGRICH HAS A CHANCE TO PUT US BACK ON COURSE, SO EVERY TRUE AMERICAN HAD BETTER TAKE TIME TO VOTE FOR GINGRICH AND IF YOU ARE A TRUE AMERICAN YOU WILL DO AS I WILL DO VOTE FOR GINGRICH. SO YOU LEFTIES OR WANTA B'S DO WHAT YOU DO BEST SCREAM AND HOLLER.

  • It is disturbing to see that the cultist have taken over this blog. Paul economic polices are not realistic and have been tried in the past. They did not work. His stand on the military and Iran is the illogical thinking of a delusional old man.

Get serious and lets defeat Obama.

    • Nathan

How could something that is not realistic have been tried in the past?

Where and when have free-market economic policies been tried and failed?

    • Seriously, Ron Paul's economic ideas have been tried in the past and haven't worked? How are the economic policies of today working for you? How did the economic policies of the G.W. Bush Administration work for you?

Ron Paul has good ideas, radical to some, necessary for all that are the only things that are going to save America and preserve freedom. Republicans and Democrats alike are afraid of him winning the nomination and the possibility that he will become president because his election will mean the end of fat cat careers for politicians. Their loss of power. Their having to be regular citizens and come under Obamacare and lose their pensions.

Sounds just like what is needed to shrink the size of government and restate the power of the People. WE need part time politicians in Washington, D.C. and one hell of a lot less legislation being handled by Congress. We might have a system of laws but it is rapidly becoming buried by numbers. No-one is capable, now, of understanding them all. What is needed are new rules for legislation that requires that all previous related legislation be considered for elimination, revision, and/or combination to significantly reduce the amount of Federal legislation in effect at one time.

Ron Paul is the only sane choice for president at this time and at this place. All incumbents that side with Obama and that have not proven by their actions that they are totally behind our constitution and listening to their constituents must be removed from office and replaced by only those new public servants that believe in the wisdom and design of our Founders shall be elected to take their places.

Is ABC News sold to Romeny too? I posted a question and still awaiting for moderation!
I want to know what Mitt Romney would do if bombing Iran won't be enough to secure Israel's security in the Middle East Would Romney take this nation to another war or let Israel defend themselves?

  • VetgorPaul

To whom ever reads my blog,
I read alot of other peoples thoughts and concerns about the upcoming election and who is the right person. I can't begin to explain why all of you are selfish and ignorant. I also can't explain to you what its like spending the past 7 years of my career in a war zone. I can't begin to explain why military vets both active or retired can't stand to be away from their families. What I can tell you is I am an army Sergeant and a war veteran, I've been married for 5 years and have a 1 year old daughter. If you vote because you think you know what's right for our country, think again. Imagine waking up one morning and your boss tells you, tour about to go to war, that your family may never see you again, that you may pay the ultimate price for someone who has never spent one day in your boots. Now imagine a country at peace with no wars and no heart ache. I hear all the time, "thank you for your service" and "we support our troops" well let ask you, do you really support us or do you think that war is cool and killing real people is the answer for peace. Well its not, we did not volunteer to join the military to go to war or kill living breathing lives. Think about that. Now ask yourself, what is this president going to do for you. And remember you don't have to worry about going to war, all your life is is monetary and economic wohs. We have spoken on who we want as our boss, and if you really cared about a vet you would listen. Thank you for reading and I hope you do the right thing. We don't need 4 more years of war. We need peace and liberty.

Finally, a wise man! and a wise question. Now let's see how Paul's admirers will answer that.

  • Kathy

I prefer that we do not go to war. I hope that Obama is re-elected. I think that Obama is smart enough to figure out how to diplomatically NOT go to war.
Enough bloodshed on both sides without "winning" – enough is enough.

    • He doesn't ever go to war, but neither did Bush 1 or 2.. That would require a declaration approved by Congress. He wants to keep the money he steals from us to promote his Nanny State wet dream.

Finally a wise man! and a wise question. Now let's see how Paul's admirers will answer that…

  • MO

Crockett is right. Gengrich is the most qualified.
Rick Perry is establishment. Don't pay attention to his insistence of being an outsider. He received sweetheart deals in real estate as governor.Check up on a house he received in Marble Falls.I wonder how that happened?

    • The Newt the most qualified? Why, because he can cry on command? Because he is a draft dodger? Because he is the Status Quo?

      Ron Paul 2012

  • LOIS

    Go Ron Paul! 2012

  • In my opinion, this debate is a waste of time because your so called "hosts" are doing nothing but pitting the candidates aginst each other instead of asking important questions about their positions on the myriad of extreme threats and issues that are destroying our country. This is a disgrace and a majow dis-service to America and Americans!

    • DA Craig

You are so right! There will come a time, at the rate we are going, when the mainstream media will be irrelevant because we will be irrelevant as a nation. Life as we know it will be gone forever. I have begun stocking food, taking a gun course, and doing anything necessary for collapse. The spare tire in my car is there because I want to be prepared just in case I get a flat tire.

  • Harold

Extremely boring debate..Find new candidates..Get rid of this group.

    • MO

Get rid of ABC. They set the stage by trying to ignore the most qualified.

      • Dave

Why is it that when someone disagre's with you you folks want to censor them? This is
one of the reasons I will not vote for your candidate.

  • jack

ok thought at first paul was not oo bad though we would be weakest military in the world under him. but his comments on the rich white and poor black irritates the hell out of me. dont get me wrong im no fan of that stuck up rich white guy but statistics show overwhelmingly that poor blacks are the ones committing the crimes. there are few to no rich white guys do bad enough crimes to even come close to an electric chair. maybe if this country got more of an even field so there arent sooo many poor people black or white there wouldnt be as many crimes period

    • Robert

Just wanted to note that your statement of us having the weakest military in the world under him is laughable since in his budget he clearly shows we would still be spending 4x more than any other government in the world. Did you even bother to look at his budget before making this baseless statement or do you just think our military is so incompetent that we'd need more than four times more money than any other government to keep from being the weakest military in the world.

  • stan

Why is abc picking questions that pit one candidate against another and not focusing on issues ? This is a terrible debate!!!

    • Dave

To find out where the candidates stand. Otherwise they will fall back on that crazy
Ronald Ragan rule of never badmouthing another republican. you would then only have
hate Obama speaches. But mabey that is what you want? Wouldn't you like to know where
your candidates stand on all subjects???

  • A Saddened Aunt

My nehhew has given 15 years to the Navy. He has just found out that in 8 months he will longer have a job/career. What are we going to do with the addition of thousands of military layoffs?

  • Elizabeth

I would ask this..With the Gop's stance on issues of a woman's right to choose, especially in cases of rape, incest or mothers health..the way they went after womens health this yr (Planned parenthood),birth control ect ..it would almost seem as if they would prefer to have women at home barefoot and pregnant.Abortion is not somethin i would do personally..except in the case of rape, incest or my health but a woman should have the right to choose that for herself. The GOP seems to think all abortion is wrong and would outlaw it if they could. How is making a woman carry the child of let's say her rapist to full term any different than when Afghanistan sent the female rape victim to jail and then will release her if she marries her rapist? yes here she could give the child up for adoption but what of the stress and trauma that would cause a rape victim not to mention the affects on the unborn child..further more would the govt then pay for all the counseling she would need for not only the rape and the pregnancy but for the fact her own government would have victimized her all over again. How does each candidate respond to that?

  • Conservativevolumetrics

ABC is certainly pushing the HOMOSEXUAL agenda, big time.

  • MO

Huntsman might as well be a Democrat.
    Romney is a Democrat.
Ron Paul is bitter old man.
Santorum would be a better VP than President.
    Gengrich is the most qualified!!!!!
Rick Perry can comb his hair or lead a cheer.

    • Bitter old man? Why? Because he believes in the Constitution? Because he calls a spade a spade? Because he thinks the government should serve the people and not the other way around?

      Please explain your b.s.

      Ron Paul 2012

  • Kali Lynn

Do you really think people who have such extremem positions of hate, ie. defining marriage to exclude gay couples, is in a position to be president of the US?

    • MO

God defined marriage, not man. Read the Bible.

      • Conservativevolumetrics

Amen – These anti-God people have a religion called A-Theism, and they are allowed to push their agenda, but when we tell them about our God's agenda, they not only don't want to hear it, but must endlessly push perverted ways down everyone's throats.
        Distgusting

        • Jason

Ok, I read the bible. Now lets start negotiations, I would like to buy your daughter. And we need to start stoning people as they come out of Red Lobster for eating shellfish. Dumbass!

  • Anyone on the stage except for Ron Paul and Huntsman would do a far better job than Obama under normal circumstances, however, we are in a crisis. The only person who could dismantle the DAMAGE THAT OBAMA HAS DONE IS NEWT GINGRICH. HE was in Washinton and knows and prooved that he can get the work done. He is the only anti establishment tea party candidate. He is Loathed and feared by the Democrates, Republican establishment, and the mainstream media. He is the only one who will bring the BOLD CHANGES THAT USA NEED " IN A HURRY". I like Santorum and he is currently surging and would make a great Presidant under normal circumstances but not now. Every Patriot should stand behind Newt Gingrich.

    • The Newt is just a fat white version of Obama, nothing more. Oh, they may claim to be different in how they are going to spend your money, but when it comes down to it they are going to take your money, like it or not, and spend it the way they want to, like it or not.

How many FREAKIN face jobs has Diane Sawyer had? What is she, 70 something?. EWW>>>> She makes Michelle Bachmann look hot by comparison. And that is enough to make me throw up by itself!
Other than that, I am really sad that Huntsman gets so little air time when he seems to know the most about what he is talking about

    • Conservativevolumetrics

She acts like she's so hot… but wow, if she only knew how odious she is, she would go away.

  • I am a Disabled veteran. Why is the veterans of this country being let down by the federal Government when it comes to VA benefits Local state courts are disregarding US code title 38 5301 None in assign ability. This law clearly states that the money is strictly for the veteran but yet local judges and courts ignore this law and use it as a asset in any type of legal process

Yes, she is such a erohw

    • Nathan

Honestly I was really disappointed with Paul's answer (and he's definitely my man in this race). One of his problems is that he doesn't question the often ridiculous premises of the moderators' questions. He should have forcefully defended the importance of the Constitution to every American family.

  • DB

So, we have all but one candidate willing to interfere in the internal affairs of other nations and send troops everywhere. I wonder how we would react to another nation in this world doing the same thing to us.

It is not weak to say that a sovereign nation has the right to govern its own affairs and that the internal affairs of another country our not our business. It seems clear to me that the primary reason they want troops sent everywhere is to keep the military industrial complex fed. If we aren't fighting wars everywhere, then we wouldn't need to spend the money on the military that we do.

Even at current levels we outspend China 7 to 1 on national defense.

    • Conservativevolumetrics

To know why this "seems" like an agenda, you should google PNAC – project for a new american century, and understand that most of our politicians are loyal to the "crown", which is an international corporation, and are allowing our nation to be used like a dirty prosti-toot, and that is the real truth, which is called conspiracy "theory"…

      Go figure…

    Hey Obama,

Don't worry about raising any money for your campaign. These morons have no chance. See you in Jan 2013.
