GOP candidates respond to President Obama's 2012 SOTU

President Obama delivered his 2012 State of the Union Address Tuesday night which offered many opportunities for the GOP candidates to critique and respond to the President. Here are excerpts from each candidate's response to the speech.

Rick Santorum:

"Tonight Barack Obama transformed the President's annual State of the Union address into the kick-off of his re-election campaign. From beginning to end, the American people heard more of the same - empty promises and grand platitudes that will do nothing to help the millions of Americans who are unemployed or under employed find a good paying job.

Rather than call for decisive action in allowing projects like the Keystone Pipeline or reducing the regulatory burden his Administration has imposed, the President declared war on those who are most successful in our society. Barack Obama should realize he's the President of all Americans, but sadly, he has instead chosen to govern and campaign as the Divider-in-Chief."

Ron Paul:

“Tonight, President Obama once again showed that he does not represent the fundamental change this country needs. Instead of offering solutions to the problems our country faces, the President was intent on delivering a campaign speech, further dealing in the typical Washington political gamesmanship that has gotten us exactly nowhere close to improving the lives of the American people.

“In a speech where much of the rhetoric was devoted to job creation, it was strange that President Obama would brag about his job-destroying national health care plan, Obamacare, and the Dodd-Frank bill, which, contrary to the President’s claims, guarantees future taxpayer bailouts of large institutions. Unfortunately, President Obama’s ‘job creation’ policies amount to little more than continuing to allow government bureaucrats to pick winners and losers, which is a recipe for continued economic stagnation."

Mitt Romney:

"Here in Florida, people used to wake up and look forward to a hard day’s work and a good, honest wage. The money they earned helped support families and build communities. Today too many factory floors are silent, warehouses are deserted, corporate offices are empty, and real estate endeavors are abandoned. Floridians are struggling to find a job, keep a home, and raise a family.

As I’ve traveled across America, I’ve heard similar stories in virtually every corner of this country. High unemployment and record home foreclosures. Debt that’s too high and opportunities that are too few. This is the real state of our union. But you won’t hear stories like these in President Obama’s address tonight. The unemployed don’t get invitations to sit with the First Lady.

Instead, tonight, the President will do what he does best. He will give a nice speech with a lot of memorable phrases. But he won’t give you the hard numbers.

Like 9.9 – that’s the unemployment rate in this state.

Or 25 percent – that’s the percentage of foreclosed homes in America that are right here in Florida.

Or $15 trillion – that’s the size of our national debt."

Newt Gingrich:

"We have a crisis of work in this country and tonight President Obama proposed nothing in the way of policy changes that will get us to robust job creation and dramatic economic growth.

Instead, the president described his conviction that his big government is built to last and should be paid for with higher taxes.

But bigger government and higher taxes will not lead to jobs and growth. Bigger government and higher taxes will instead lead to more people on food stamps, a situation which the President and his party defend as a fair outcome.

Here we have to confront the truth about President Obama. Economic growth and prosperity is not really at the top of his agenda. He will always prefer a food stamp economy to a paycheck economy and call it fair."

God help us if this man is re-elected for another 4 years. I didn't buy into him 4 years ago, and the same holds true again at this election. He is arrogant, proud, and has some deep seeded anger for this country. He will continue to destroy us by his policies or maybe I should say lack of policies. Our founding fathers would turn over in their graves if they saw what he has done to the condition of this country. He is full of lies and empty promises. The only person who is prospering here is Barack Hussein Obama!!

    • Robin

Mwah. I think he means well. He is not a commi or a socialist as many americans think, but he just has a failed presidency. He made too many promises he couldn't keep. He proved unwilling to do anything serious about those responsible for the financial crisis (don't bite the hand that feeds you I guess). He continued Bush his foreign policy. It's a shame really.

Obama — the next new host of Family Feud (can anyone give a total count of the women he kissed after his Misstate of the Union)?

Afterwards — Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels neutered in a very diplomatic way all the demagoguery Little Hussein parroted!

Not strong enough for me — but still kudos to Mitch!

Demand of the media — Name the actual Persons that have earned enough money to finance our Nation's huge debt!

Can anyone explain how it is possible for ANY Entity to have Legally earned the monies needed to finance ALL GOVERNMENTS on earth (and still keep them all in Debt)? A simple calculation will show that if all the humans in the last 50,000 years (since cave-men till now) worked for a living wage, no such amount could have been EARNED, that can finance every nation on this planet!

The conclusion must be — that these Few, World Money Lenders that finance Nations, have made this much profit by PURE THEFT.

GIVE US THE NAMES AND ADDRESSES OF THESE MONEY LENDERS, so all American People know who owns the mortgage of our Nation!

Republican rant. Ugly. One understands why defenders of what is essentially a Republican bankers'-made recession want to obfuscate causation. But why so steadfast in preventing a cure?

    • Surfisher

FLStearns — Your attempt to sound erudite by inserting "to obfuscate causation" was negated by the rest of your pc drivel.

Ron Paul offers the Cure — are you so mentally unadapted that you cannot comprehend logic, or is your worldview limited to bankrupt socialist dogma?

Anyway — thanks for posting, it's good to see the makeup of Obama's supporters.

I thought I would give him the benefit of a doubt. Five minutes into his speach I couldn't listen or look at his face. I turned back a few times only to find nothing has changed! We need to come together and ask The Lord to heal our land. Republican candidates: PLEASE STOP FIGHTING! This coming election is yours to lose. Don't blow it now.

  • Buckeye

We need someone to replace the president or else we are sunk. Romney is the only who is capable, has a clean history, and electable.

  • Darryl

I agree with what Santorum and Gingrich have said, however, the, Unemployment rate, the Housing Foreclosure Rate and the National Debt were NOT entirely of Obama's making. The Republicans had a BIG HAND in making that happen. Obama's Policies haven't helped either, but I don't believe ANY of the Republican's Plans (except Ron Paul's) would come anywhere NEAR what needs to be done to help our economy.

Just like Obama, all we get from Santorum, Gingrich and Romney are "generic" promises, "empty" platitudes and Government Spending Cuts "around the edges". NO REAL CUTS from any of them.

I just wish people would look for some TRUTH in what these Politicians "say", rather than just "believe" everything that comes out of their mouths.

You CAN'T "pay down" the Debt, until ACTUAL Spending Cuts are implemented and the BORROWING ceases. Forget about "Balancing-the-Budget" for now. It's a "pipe dream" until the Government learns to "live within it's means". Imposing a Balanced Budget right now, would DECIMATE our Economy.

    • Surfisher

Darryl — agree with your post with a minor qualification.

I understand that after the ever increasing debt the government leeches, i.e. politicians (non-producers by definition — since these create nothing of intrinsic value, but are just peddlers of words) are creating, it would be a nice dream to eventually balance the budget.
But why should we settle for a balanced budget? After-all, it means breaking even.

No legitimate private enterprises can last losing money, or even breaking even — unless making a profit, they go out of business.

Government that is supposed to be run by the People for the People must be held to the same standard as the rest — unless creating a surplus, close doors!

Only Ron Paul has the true solution to our runaway government that is on a charted path to destroy our Nation — unless the people wake up and comprehend his message, we are The Doomed.

I don't care for anything any of them say. They say what they think the American people want to hear. We need to secure our borders and make anyone come here illegally do it the legal way. Punish the companies that hire illegals. No illegals should get any welfare help AT ALL until they are legal and they need to do that from their own COUNTRY! If they cannot get food, medical or jobs they will not stay in America! I'm sick and tired of our jobs going to illegals or those claiming you better hire me or I will sue you because you are racist! I have seen this way too many times. We need more jobs that pay a LIVING WAGE so that people can get off food stamps, government medical, housing, ect. My husband breaks his butt to get a job that can afford our 7 person family and he works 40-50 hours a week (as much as his employer will allow) while he continues to look for a higher paying job so that we can LIVE! The government needs to make the sperm donors of babies help support those babies and not screw the few good men out there who do pay!! I get around $100 for 3 kids because their real dad does not want to get off his butt and help support them so my husband helps me care for them while paying $500 child support for his son too! He has ONE he pays $500 for and I had 3 with a man I was married to for 10 yrs who pays notta really. I love how the above men running just wanna throw everyone off gov help. How about we focus on the higher paying jobs and as they make more they will no longer qualify for the help. Too many jobs pay min. wage these days! I refuse to vote obama who is at an alarming rate breaking our economy to create a OWO, who believes it is okay to kill innocent babies, believes everyone has a right to be married, and many other reasons. I also don't see anyone running that I trust. I think they are all nuts! The ONLY 2 people I may consider voting for is Paul and Santorum. Romney is just another obama in disguise and newt is a firecracker waiting to explode. No thank you!

We must accept we are lost. Americans don't want the truth, they want to hear Barak's or other's versions that predict a sunny future. Ron Paul is the only truth-sayer and he is repeatedly dismissed. Read the current economist's analysis of our future, if we get only the moderate change they all promise. Without dramatic cuts we are looking at hyperinflation. Paul states this clearly and I know if he is not elected, we will look back on this time fondly compared to what is ahead. All but Paul are promising war with Iran, which will be the last nail in our economic coffin. Heck Newt wants to start picking a fight with Cuba, what's that about?

Having watched the vote-for-me-'cause-I'm-not-him Republican debates and the taxpayer-financed electioneering by the communist-in-chief, I believe that I may migrate to Belize. Why Belize? Nobody freezes to death there, you can live pretty well even on 15% dollars compared to the 1970 ones before Nixon (Republican) took us off the gold standard. The exchange rate was 360 yen to the buck in 1960. Japan has had the worst decade in. well, decades. But look at the exchange rate now. English is the language of common life and business in Belize, unlike here.
I've served my country, come near to death in defense of liberty and I volunteered to do it. Now the Commander-In-Chief who didn't even finish his term as Senator, is reducing our ability to defend our shores like his previous incarnation, Jimmy Carter.
It's time to say, as a voting population, if it's an incumbent - vote it out. At ALL levels of government. The next step will involve a letter that starts:
When, in the course of Human Events …
Dry powder is a good thing.

Paul, I, too, was very alarmed when I heard Newt's comments in the last debate about Cuba. I think if he is elected President, he will consider himself President of the world with the power to topple and replace other governments at will. I think he is to be feared.

  • Jim

Too bad the record of performance of this President, contrary to his 2008 campaign pledge of Hope (as in we are the change we hoped for), has resulted in a lack of trust and confidence by such a large portion of the electorate. So that we all now have to face up to the knowledge that with Obama it really doesn't matter what he says, because its not connected to what he does.

  • Good speaker, and good performance, I think he is a hard Challenger by any off rep.candidates.
Doors and widows are close, how could they get in?
