No rest for the weary when it comes to GOP primary debates. We're moving from a 3-debate month of September to just a 2-debate month of October. Last night we witnessed the Bloomberg GOP debate from Dartmouth College in New Hampshire and, in a mere 6 days from today, we'll be watching another GOP debate from Las Vegas, Nevada.
The October 18th debate is sponsored by CNN and the Western Republican Leadership Conference.
Air Time: Tuesday, October 18th at 8pm ET on CNN from the Sands Expo Center in Las Vegas, Nevada
Participants: Bachmann, Cain, Gingrich, Santorum, Paul, Perry, Romney, Huntsman
Report from CNN:
Washington (CNN) – CNN has established objective criteria – modeled after criteria the network used for the June 13th presidential debate in New Hampshire and the September 12th presidential debate in Florida – to determine who will receive invitations to participate in the October 18th "Western Republican Presidential Debate."
Participants need to meet the threshold outlined below to receive an invitation to this debate:
A person must receive an average of at least 2.00 percent in at least three national polls released between September 1st and October 16th that were conducted by the following organization: ABC, AP, Bloomberg, CBS News/New York Times, CNN, FOX, Gallup, Los Angeles Times, Marist, McClatchy, NBC, Newsweek, Pew, Quinnipiac, Reuters, USA Today and Time.
CNN is partnering with the Western Republican Leadership Conference to present the October 18th "Western Republican Presidential Debate," live from Las Vegas at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. Follow all the issues and campaign news leading up to the debate on http://www.cnnpolitics.com and @cnnpolitics on Twitter.
There is a candidate in danger of losing his invite and his name is Jon Huntsman as MediaIte reports:
Jon Huntsman needs to hit 2 percent nationally in a poll in the next 20 days or he will be kicked off CNN’s debate guest list, The New York Times reports.
CNN says that candidates must average 2 percent or more in three individual polls published after September 1st in order to be eligible to participate in their October 18th debate being held at The Venetian Resort in Las Vegas.
Huntsman has managed to garner 2 percent in two polls, but has been mired at 1 percent in all others.
Huntsman has until the day of the debate on October 18th to produce another poll showing him garnering 2% of the vote which will get his foot in the door. My guess is he might make the cut one more time around and still be included. On the other hand, you have to believe the 7 other candidates are hoping to whittle the field so they all can scoop up a few more minutes of time.
Update
Huntsman will qualify for the debate, his spot is confirmed. It will be the traditional 8-candidate lineup for Las Vegas.

He has qualified.
Thanks for pointing that out, story updated.
I disagree that all the other candidates would want Huntsman knocked out. They have little to gain from a few extra minutes, when all the other candidates are also gaining a couple of minutes. And since Huntsman isn't going to win anyway, getting rid of him doesn't automatically improve their odds.
My guess is Romney would want to keep Huntsman in for the nonce. As long as there's one clear front-runner and everyone else is chasing him, it's better for him if there are a lot of people chasing him and making each other look like minor candidates. And Huntsman is sort of mini-Romney anyway; any support he does manage to draw is probably destined for Romney in the end. It could make for a cute little poll bump when Huntsman does finally throw in the towel. I think this Romney-vs-the-field situation is good for Romney; if he can make it last through a few primaries, all the better.
Gary Johnson should be there too. It is good to have the republican party moving back where they belong, with the likes of Bachmann, Johnson, even Gingrich, but to guy who has always been the most important and influencial is Ron Paul. If you vote for these others you are taking away from the one guy that deserves all the credit because his idea's havent changed, the republican party has shifted toward him. But if anyone other than Ron Paul is elected there is no doubt in my mind they will shift back just like Obama did.
At the next debate, I am going to try and pose the following question, I don't care who answers it, but I hope all present give some answer:
Alright, this is a three part question, so if you could ask each part in sequence, that would be wonderful, thank you. Part one: Have you read the United States Constitution and its associated documents, including the Federalist Papers and the Writings of Montesquieu? Part two: Are your familar with the Supreme Court's rulings on the various Amendments of The Constitution and its asociated documents, including those mentioned in part one? Part three: Having answered and unserstood parts one and two, what Legal Justification do you have for blocking Gay Marriage, Reinstating Don't Ask, Don't Tell and continuing to deny Equal Rights to Gay and Lesbain Citizens?
@ Luke I have read all those documents and also many of the readings our own founders have read, as well. Locke, Blackstone and Montiesquieu. BTW: There is nothing in the constitution that prevents Gays and Lesbians from having sex. They are free to do so in privacy of their own homes.
And, hopefully, having read the constituion yourself you fully understand that the Federal Government is limited by their enumerated powers. There is not one of them dealing with anything to do with social codes of behavior. That they left up to the states. Our founders used natural law to help them define what were the rights of man… Gay sex is not natural and is not from GOD. Sorry but the bible is pretty explicit in how they look upon gays. Soddom and Gommorah were destroyed bc of gay sex.
Did you know that buggery (gay sex) was punishable by death (unless you were under the age of 14 and/or forced) before the constitution was passed right in many of our colonies??
So I sincerely doubt our founders would look kindly on Gay Marriage.
THE BIBLE??? Give up your reliance on imaginary friends, will you people? Your God was the most murderous person in literary history, enough already.
Newt Gingrich is the man with the vision to get the country back on track. Go to Newt.org to review his platform. Some of the ideas are bold and really make you think, what is he talking about, but if you visit his facebook page and look for his speeches on youtube, you will find that everything outlined in teh 21st Century Contract with America is well reasons and is logically sound.
He is the one to fix this country. Go Newt!
I am just a dude that has known that Newt is the best man for this country since 2007. Please check him out and consider him for your candidate!
Having listened to and watched each of the debates among the candidates, I am inclined to agree with you. I like Herman Cain because he is very personable, but when I listen to the answers to questions presented, Newt is coming off as the most qualified of all of them. And I like the fact that he does not fall for these attempts by the hosts to pit the candidates against each other. He wants to stay on topic and discuss the issues and the failed policies of the current administration.
I agree. I like Herman Cain a lot and would like to see him in the mix for sure…perhaps as VP and then 2016 run for pres. but Newt Gingrich has everything it takes to debate and win against Obama and get things done in Washington if elected. He knows the facts backwards and forwards and that's exactly what we need, someone who presents the facts and only the facts. If someone like Newt can avoid the pitfalls of religious and moral questions he could be a winner. He needs money though so if you want to see this country grow and if you want to make sure we choose the best man for the job, contribute anything you can to keep him in the game as well as any other candidate you are thinking of supporting!
Oh my. I want to throw an answer at the gamy marriage debate here:
Marriage is a religious sacrament. The religions that perform this ceremony have religious text that do not agree with the gay and lesbian lifestyle. Therefore they do not agree with gays and lesbians being married.
The arguement is about equal rights. The question is why is the government recognizing marriages? In the eyes of the law, the government should recogonize all people under civil unions. When talking about church and state this should be at odds with one another.
Simplification:
Government recogination: Civil Unions for all is equality
Chruches: Marriage
If the gay and lesbian community has a church that is willing to marry them, no one should be able to say different, but government should not be in the business of dictating religious acts.
Why is this even an arguement?
Will the next debate on the 18th on CNN be available live via the internet? We don't have cable or dish so having it online works great.
Yes, CNN will stream it live. It will be on the front page at CNN.com and a link will be available here.
I would like to see Gary Johnson in the debate. He is a legitimate candidate with worthwhile ideas. I hope someone reads this!
Gary Johnson deserves to be a part of the process. He has a proven track record and he is a pretty funny dude.

[...] 8pm ET on CNN – Tickets Location: Sands Expo Convention Center in Las Vegas, NV Sponsor: CNN and the Western Republican Leadership Conference Participants: Bachmann, Cain, Gingrich, Huntsman, Paul, Perry, Romney, Santorum [...]
Newt is the most qualified person to restore this nation to greatness. He, by far can get the job done. If Romney wins, I am afraid we will not see Enough change. I like all of the candidates and would vote for who ever wins the nomination. We have to get rid of obama and his socialistic policies. This is by far the most important election in our lifetime. If Newt does not win, I hope he will be in a top position in the winners cabinet…Same goes for Cain and Sanotorum.
I also believe that Gary Johnson should be included in the debate. Polling is not a fair criteria for debate inclusion if candidates like Johnson are not even on the list for many of these phone polls! I cannot help but think that CNN is worried that Gary will get strong GOP support if his message is heard.
ZZZZZZ…..Huntsman, Bachman, Santorum, why bother ? These three have as much chance to win the Republican nomination as Hugo Chavez. Keep Gingrich in the debates as a respected elder statesman, Cain as comedy relief and the good Doctor as the classic nut vote gadfly (think Perot, Sharpton, Kucinich) In reality this boils down to Romney or Perry, the sooner we focus on the differences between these two and stop listening to the erratic rantings of also ran wanna be's the sooner we can make a good decision on our eventual nominee….
I DO BELIVE THAT THE SOONER WE GET THE CANIDATES OUT AND COUNT ONTHE TWO PERRY AND ROMNEY WE CAN GET THIS SHOW ON THE ROAD, I PRFER PERRY MYSELF, THERE IS REASONS THAT ROMMEY NEVER MADE IT BEFORE IS HIS POLICY WASNT ANY GOOD JUST LIKE THAY ARE NO GOOD NOW, THAT ROMMEY CARE FOR INSTANCE, YOU KNOW WHERE THAT CAME FROM, OBAMA CARE AND NOW THE ISINT GOING TO WORK, JUST LIKE EVERY THING OBAMA DID NOTHING WORKS, IT JUST GETS WORSE, WE NEED TO GEET HIM OUT OF OFFICE NOW . IN TEXAS WE GET WORK ALONG WITH A LOT OF ETHIER THINGS LIKE HOUSING,AND ETC. I BEEN HERE FOR 32 YEARS AND BEFORE I TRID OTHER PL;ACESD,IT WORKED FOR ME AND STILL DOSE
Shame on CNN for not inviting Gary Johnson. How can he show up in poll numbers if your own polls exclude his name from being one of the options? What are you people afraid of, that people will find out he's sane and offers a dramatic choice of different opinions? He's the only one available who could bring in crossover voters from the Democratic party. He's also not running with his religion on his sleeve, which most of the others seem to think they need to do to suck up to the religious nutjobs out there. Enough with the fantasy-believers, we need people willing to see and speak the truth in the government, or there is no way we can fix the problems we face.
How'd that pray session for rain work out in Texas, Mr. Perry?
